What is Piracetam™?
Piracetam is a cyclic GABA derivative also known as 2-oxo-pyrrolidine acetamide. It is a dietary supplement that supports and enhances normal brain structure and function. Piracetam is considered an intelligence booster and central nervous system (CNS) stimulator with no known toxic or addictive capacity. The ability of Piracetam to "wake up your brain" is so impressive that it prompted researchers to define a new nutraceutical category called "nootropics" – nutrients for the mind.
Piracetam is similar in molecular structure to the amino acid pyroglutamate. They have the same basic chemical structure, 2-oxo-pyrrolidine, but they differ in their side chains. Pyroglutamate is 2-oxo-pyrrolidine carboxylic acid, and Piracetam is 2-oxo-pyrrolidine acetamide. Piracetam enhances cognition under conditions of hypoxia (too little oxygen), and also enhances memory and some kinds of learning in normal humans. Piracetam is used to nutritionally support beneficial therapeutic outcomes regarding alcoholism, stroke, Down syndrome, vertigo, Alzheimer's, dementia, sickle cell anemia, dyslexia, autism and other health problems (Pelton, 1989).
An intriguing effect of Piracetam is its promotion of the normal flow of information between the right and left hemispheres of the brain via the corpus callosum (Buresova, 1976). Communication between the two sides of the brain is associated with flashes of creativity. This may also be the basis for Piracetam's usefulness in nutritional support for beneficial therapeutic outcomes with dyslexia (Dilanni, 1985). Piracetam is thought to regulate cell membrane permeability more efficiently.
The effect of Piracetam can be enhanced if taken with many other nootropics, however it is recommended that lower servings of each be taken in conjunction with one another. When the nutrient choline and Piracetam are taken together there is a synergistic effect that causes a greater improvement in memory than the sum of each when taken alone (Bartus, 1981). Choline helps to replenish the important neurotransmitter acetylcholine which is metabolized with Piracetam.
One study suggests that Piracetam may regulate the number of cholinergic receptors in the brain. Older mice were given Piracetam for two weeks and then the density of muscarinic cholinergic receptors in their frontal cortexes was measured -- these older mice had 30-40% higher density of these receptors (Pilch, 1988). Piracetam appears to have a regenerative nourishing effect on the nervous system.
Piracetam has become popular as a cognitive enhancer among students. A two week regimen of Piracetam was found to enhance verbal memory in healthy college students.
Piracetam appears to regulate levels of lipofuscin in the brain. (Lipofuscin accumulation is a common symptom of aging and alcoholism).
Piracetam appears to be helpful in stimulating and regulating normal cognition in Alzheimers disease and senile dementia patients.
Piracetam has been found to support normal cognition after stroke. It also supports normal cognition in cases of chronic ischemia.

Suggested Serving: One (1) to six (6) capsules daily as a dietary supplement. Best when taken in intervals throughout the day. Greatest effect is seen generally after 3 weeks of daily use. Some literature recommends a high "attack" serving be taken for the first two days. When people first take Piracetam they may not notice any effect until they take a higher serving.
