What is Alpha GPC™?
Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline (A-GPC) is a dietary supplement recognized as a very powerful choline donor that can significantly stimulate and regulate acetylcholine levels in brain neurons and also in motor units. By supporting normal acetylcholine levels, the body’s primary neurotransmitter, numerous scientific and clinical research studies have demonstrated that cognitive functioning can improve dramatically, thus restoring and maintaining youthful mental performance. In addition, there are numerous neuromuscular optimization benefits as well. Many practitioners regard A-GPC to be the leading brain nutrient for focus and support of normal brain structure and function.
The functional benefits of Alpha-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline (A-GPC) include:
· Cognitive Enhancement—the boost of choline and release of acetylcholine as a result of A-GPC supplementation can dramatically stimulate cognitive functioning, which includes memory, learning, concentration and focus.
· Neuromuscular Optimization — helps to increase lean muscle mass and strength, decrease body fat, and increase muscular power output through its action involving recruitment of motor units and muscle fibers.
· Growth Hormone — A-GPC is considered a “GH Secretagogue” and hence has potential to be one of the most significant agents to help build lean muscle mass and strength, and to help reduce fat mass
COGNITIVE ENHANCEMENT SUPPORT
A-GPC provides an immediate supply of choline to the bloodstream and the brain across the blood-brain barrier. Choline is an essential component of all major phospholipids, a major component of all the cell membranes in our bodies. Choline undergoes a process called acetylation, resulting in the formation of acetylcholine, which is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, and responsible for the transmission of communication impulses between neurons. A-GPC is also a precursor for phosphatidylcholine (PC), which crosses the blood-brain barrier, to boost choline levels in the brain, and is involved in the synthesis and release of acetylcholine. This boost of choline and release of acetylcholine significantly stimulates cognitive functioning. When a declining choline level becomes a limiting factor in the synthesis of acetylcholine, peak physical and mental performance can be negatively and dramatically affected. Synthesis of PC is speculated to lead to changes in the cell membrane of anterior pituitary cells that enhance the stimulatory effect of GHRH on hGH release, a master hormone that in part regulates basal metabolism and hence body composition.
NEUROMUSCULAR OPTIMIZATION - The True “Mind to Muscle” Nutrient…
A-GPC has been shown to naturally and significantly stimulate and regulate the level of acetylcholine, and thus offers a unique means to enhance and optimize athletic performance. When combining the acknowledged mental performance boosting effects with the muscular performance gaining effects, A-GPC can be viewed as a very novel, safe, and natural nutraceutical, with significant performance enhancing capabilities. Since most athletic endeavors demand superior mental clarity as well as muscular strength, agility, and finesse, A-GPC is the hottest nutraceutical in the “mind to muscle” category. A-GPC has particular application in sports nutrition and targeted to individuals concerned with top performance and youthful body compositions.
During intense exercise, stress, and physical activity, choline becomes a limiting factor in the formation of acetylcholine, the motor unit’s primary neurotransmitter, diminishing acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction and affecting peak performance. Motor units are recruited according to the Size Principle, where low threshold activation motor units are recruited first, and later, high threshold activation motor units are recruited, as required by force demands.
It has been demonstrated through scientific study, that engaging in intense exercise can cause a significant reduction in plasma choline levels, thus reducing global stores of acetylcholine, and causing a negative impact on mental and physical endurance and muscular performance. From a physiological standpoint, this is best explained by the fact that the diminishment of acetylcholine substantially compromises the continual firing of motor units and contraction of “movement specific” muscle groups. Now it gets exciting, as it can be hypothesized that since all muscle movements – explosive power output, agility, jumping ability – are related to contraction is related to available acetylcholine stores, then maximizing acetylcholine should optimize every type of muscular performance. The amount of hGH secreted steadily declines with age and some related symptoms include increased fat, fatigue, risk for cardiovascular disease, decreased lean muscle mass, physical mobility, ability to heal, negative changes in sleep patterns and lower life expectancy. A-GPC has been shown to stimulate the intrinsic production and release of hGH, likely by inhibiting release of somatostatin.
